CMYK to colortone: ink-based tints, shades and tones
Print designers often need lighter and darker versions of a spot color built from process inks. This CMYK to colortone generator takes one CMYK value and returns three ramps, so you can see how the inks change as the color moves toward paper white, black or a neutral gray.
Example: cmyk(0%, 61%, 72%, 0%) in 4 steps
Tints (mixed with white):
0% cmyk(0%, 61.2%, 72.2%, 0%)
25% cmyk(0%, 45.9%, 54.1%, 0%)
50% cmyk(0%, 30.6%, 36.1%, 0%)
75% cmyk(0%, 15.3%, 18%, 0%)
100% cmyk(0%, 0%, 0%, 0%)
Shades (mixed with black):
0% cmyk(0%, 61.2%, 72.2%, 0%)
25% cmyk(0%, 60.7%, 71.7%, 25.1%)
50% cmyk(0%, 60.9%, 71.9%, 49.8%)
75% cmyk(0%, 60.9%, 71.9%, 74.9%)
100% cmyk(0%, 0%, 0%, 100%)
Tones (mixed with gray):
0% cmyk(0%, 61.2%, 72.2%, 0%)
25% cmyk(0%, 52%, 61.4%, 12.5%)
50% cmyk(0%, 40.6%, 47.9%, 24.7%)
75% cmyk(0%, 24.4%, 28.8%, 37.3%)
100% cmyk(0%, 0%, 0%, 49.8%)
The first line reads 61.2% and 72.2% rather than 61% and 72% because the input was converted to whole RGB channels, rgb(255, 99, 71), before the inks were recalculated.
What the ramps mean in ink
- Tints scale every ink down in proportion, with no black. The 50% tint is almost exactly half the ink: 30.6% magenta and 36.1% yellow. That matches how print tints (screens) of a color work on white paper.
- Shades keep the color inks nearly constant and add black. K climbs 25%, 50%, 75% while magenta and yellow stay around 61% and 72%. The last step is plain K 100%, not a rich black.
- Tones reduce the color inks and add black at the same time, ending at a neutral 49.8% K.
Limitations for print
The blending happens in RGB and the inks are recalculated with the simple formula, without an ICC profile. Real presses show dot gain, so a 15% tint can print darker than it looks on screen, and very light steps may be hard to hold evenly. Heavy shades also add total ink: the 75% shade above totals about 208% coverage, which is fine for most presses but worth checking against your printer's limit.
Treat the ramps as a planning aid and confirm key steps with a proof. To view the same ramps as screen codes, read the hex codes on the swatches, or compare with CMYK to HEX. Colortone to CMYK starts from a color name, and CMYK to RGB shows the channel values.
