All HTML color names in one list
Every modern browser understands 148 colour keywords in HTML and CSS. They come from a mix of sources: the 16 original HTML 4 colours such as navy and teal, the X11 colour names adopted by SVG and CSS 3, and rebeccapurple, added in 2014 in memory of Rebecca Meyer. This page lists all of them with their HEX, RGB and HSL values.
Using named colors
.warning { color: darkorange; }
.debug { outline: 2px dashed hotpink; }
Keywords are case-insensitive and work anywhere a colour is accepted, including SVG fill attributes and canvas drawing.
Surprises worth knowing
darkgray(#a9a9a9) is lighter thangray(#808080), a legacy of the X11 list.gray/grey,aqua/cyanandfuchsia/magentaare exact duplicates.greenis #008000; the pure green #00ff00 is calledlime.
The 16 original HTML colors
These are the names defined in HTML 4, and they are the ones you will still see in old markup and email templates. Most use only the channel values 00, 80, C0 and FF:
| Name | HEX | Name | HEX |
|---|---|---|---|
| black | #000000 | silver | #C0C0C0 |
| gray | #808080 | white | #FFFFFF |
| maroon | #800000 | red | #FF0000 |
| purple | #800080 | fuchsia | #FF00FF |
| green | #008000 | lime | #00FF00 |
| olive | #808000 | yellow | #FFFF00 |
| navy | #000080 | blue | #0000FF |
| teal | #008080 | aqua | #00FFFF |
Two other keywords, transparent and currentcolor, are valid colour values in CSS but are not counted among the 148 named colours, because they do not stand for one fixed colour.
Beyond keywords
Named colours are great for prototypes and teaching, but they do not form a balanced palette. To find the keyword closest to one of your own colours, use the color name finder; to build a real design palette, start with the color palette generator.
Grid and table views
The grid view is ideal for browsing: colours are sorted by hue and then by lightness, so you can scan from reds through yellows, greens and blues to purples, with the greys grouped at the start. The table view is better when you need values: it lists every keyword with its HEX code, rgb() and hsl() notation, and the name and HEX code can be copied with a click. The search box filters both views by name or by HEX fragment, so typing "slate" shows all nine keywords that contain it, from darkslateblue to slategrey, together.
Browser support
All 148 names are supported by every browser in use today, including in inline style attributes, SVG and email clients that accept CSS.
Clicking a swatch copies the keyword itself, which is often more readable in code reviews than a HEX value. In table view you can copy the HEX code or name separately.
