Convert JPG to PNG without uploading
JPG (or JPEG) is the standard format for photos, while PNG is the standard for graphics that must stay pixel-perfect. This JPG to PNG converter decodes your JPEG in the browser and saves every pixel into a PNG file. The status line shows both file sizes and the image dimensions, so you can see exactly what the conversion did.
JPG vs PNG at a glance
| JPG / JPEG | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy: discards detail to save space | Lossless: every pixel is kept exactly |
| Transparency | Not supported | Full alpha channel |
| Best for | Photos with smooth gradients | Screenshots, logos, text, diagrams |
| Typical size for a photo | Small | Several times larger |
| Re-saving | Quality drops each time | No quality loss |
Why convert a JPG to PNG?
- Editing without further loss. Every time you edit and re-save a JPEG, it is compressed again and artifacts accumulate. Converting to PNG first lets you edit repeatedly without further degradation.
- Adding transparency later. JPG cannot store transparent pixels. Convert to PNG, then remove the background in your image editor.
- Uploads that require PNG. Some forms, app stores, icon generators and print services accept only PNG.
- Screenshots saved as JPG. Text in a JPEG screenshot tends to get blurry halos; PNG keeps whatever is left crisp from now on.
What PNG cannot do for a JPG
Converting does not restore detail that JPEG compression already removed. The blocky artifacts and color smudges in the original are preserved faithfully in the PNG. And because PNG stores every pixel losslessly, a photo usually becomes larger, often two to five times the JPEG size. That is expected, not an error. If you need a small file for the web, keep the JPEG or convert it to WebP with the JPG to WebP converter instead.
JPG, JPEG or JFIF?
They are the same format. ".jpg" became common because early versions of Windows limited file extensions to three letters; ".jpeg" is the full name, and ".jfif" refers to the JPEG File Interchange Format that most JPEG files follow. Some Windows setups save web images as ".jfif", which many apps then refuse to open. All three extensions are accepted here, and converting to PNG is an easy way to get a file every program understands.
Metadata and orientation
Only the pixels are converted. EXIF data such as camera model, capture date and GPS location is not copied into the PNG, which is a nice side effect if you are sharing photos publicly. Most modern browsers apply the photo's orientation flag while decoding, so pictures taken in portrait mode come out upright. Wide-gamut color profiles are converted for display, so colors may shift very slightly on professional monitors.
