Placeholder text from the lorem ipsum generator
Lorem ipsum is the standard filler text of design and publishing. It looks like readable prose, with realistic word lengths, commas and sentence breaks, but it does not distract anyone with meaning. That lets clients and colleagues judge typography, spacing and layout without starting to edit the copy.
This lorem ipsum generator assembles sentences from the traditional Latin vocabulary. Sentences vary between 6 and 16 words, and paragraphs between 4 and 8 sentences, so blocks of text look natural rather than repetitive.
Where does lorem ipsum come from?
The text is a scrambled extract from De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the ends of good and evil"), written by the Roman philosopher Cicero in 45 BC. The familiar opening comes from the phrase "…neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet…" in section 1.10.32; "dolorem" was cut to "lorem", and words were altered and added until the passage no longer made sense.
It spread through the printing industry as typesetting specimen text, became widely known through Letraset dry-transfer sheets in the 1960s and was later bundled with desktop publishing software. Today it appears in design tools, website themes and CMS demos.
Options explained
- Paragraphs – best for article bodies, blog templates and long-form layouts.
- Sentences – good for card descriptions, testimonials and product blurbs.
- Words – ideal for headlines, buttons, labels and navigation items. Up to 5,000 of any unit can be created.
- Start with "Lorem ipsum…" – begins the text with the classic opening so it is instantly recognizable as placeholder copy.
- HTML paragraphs – wraps each paragraph in
<p>…</p>so you can paste it straight into a template or CMS source view.
Example (2 sentences)
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Tempor magna veniam nostrud, aliquip commodo exercitation labore dolore. With the HTML option enabled, paragraphs come out ready for markup:
<p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Duis aute irure…</p>
<p>Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa…</p>
Lorem ipsum in different tools
Many editors have their own shortcut: typing lorem and pressing Tab in VS Code's Emmet, for instance, or using a dummy-text plugin in design software. A generator is still useful when you need a precise amount of text, a lot of it at once, or HTML-ready paragraphs to paste into a CMS, an email template or a database seed file.
Using placeholder text well
- Match the real length. If headlines will be about eight words, test with eight words, not three. Content that is longer than expected is the most common cause of broken layouts.
- Replace it before launch. Search your templates for "lorem" before publishing; search engines treat pages full of placeholder text as low quality.
- Test other scripts too. Latin-style text will not reveal problems with long German compounds, right-to-left languages or CJK characters, so test real translations as well.
- Check readability. Once real copy is in place, a word counter helps you keep sections within your planned length.
