An online notepad that saves as you type
This online notepad is a plain-text editor in a browser tab. Jot down a phone number, draft a message, keep a to-do list or paste text to tidy it up. There is nothing to install and no account: your note is saved automatically in this browser and is still there when you come back.
Where your note is stored
The note is kept in your browser’s local storage for this site, on this device. It is not uploaded to a server and does not sync to your phone, another browser or another computer. That also means:
- Clearing your browsing data or site data for this site deletes the note.
- In a private or incognito window the note disappears when you close the window.
- If your browser blocks storage, the editor still works but cannot keep the note; the label says “Not saved” so you know to download it.
- Browsers allow each site only a few megabytes of local storage. A very large note may not fit; you will see a message, and you can still download it.
Save & Share is the one exception: pressing it uploads a copy of the note to create a link you can send. Opening such a link shows the shared note without touching the note saved in your browser, until you choose to keep it.
Features
- Autosave: about half a second after you stop typing, with the time of the last save above the note.
- Counts: words, characters, characters without spaces, lines, the cursor line and column, and the size of your selection.
- Open and download: open .txt and other text files, or drop one on the note. Download the note as a .txt file with the name you choose. Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on a Mac) downloads too.
- Find and replace: find the next match (Enter, or Shift+Enter for the previous one), replace it, or replace all matches at once, with an optional Match case.
- Undo without pop-ups: Clear, Replace all and opening a file show an Undo button that restores the previous text.
- Display: font size from 12 to 24 px, monospace or sans-serif, and line wrapping on or off. These settings are remembered too.
Example
Paste a list copied from a spreadsheet, then use Replace all to turn every tab into a comma:
Anna Sales Berlin
Marc Support Lyon
becomes
Anna,Sales,Berlin
Marc,Support,Lyon
Type a tab in the Find box by copying one from the note. If you replaced the wrong thing, press Undo.
Plain text only
The notepad keeps text, not formatting. When you paste from a word processor or a web page, bold, links and images are dropped and only the words remain, which is handy for cleaning text before pasting it elsewhere. For headings and lists that render as formatted text, use the Markdown Editor instead.
Working with several tabs
There is one note per browser. If you have the notepad open in two tabs, a tab you are not typing in picks up the changes saved by the other one. To keep several separate notes, download each as its own .txt file and open it again when you need it.
More text tools
For a detailed breakdown of reading time and sentence length, paste your note into the Word Counter. To remove stray spaces and invisible characters, try the Text Cleaner, and to drop repeated lines use Remove Duplicate Lines.
