Fun ways to use random emoji

  • Emoji story game – generate five emoji and have everyone tell a story that uses them in order.
  • Guess the movie or song – one player uses random emoji as inspiration for a puzzle, others guess.
  • Writing and drawing prompts – a random animal plus a random object makes a quirky prompt.
  • Social posts and chats – add a little variety to messages and captions.
  • Icons for prototypes – quick placeholder icons for lists or cards.

For developers: emoji as test data

Emoji are one of the best ways to find text-handling bugs. Most emoji lie outside the Basic Multilingual Plane, so each takes two UTF-16 code units (JavaScript's '😀'.length is 2) and four bytes in UTF-8. Paste a few into your forms and APIs to check that:

  • length limits count characters rather than bytes or code units, as intended;
  • the database column uses a full UTF-8 encoding (MySQL needs utf8mb4, not utf8);
  • truncation does not split an emoji in half and leave a broken character.

You can inspect the underlying code points with text to ASCII codes or string to hex.

Composite emoji to add to your tests

Each emoji from the generator is a single code point. Real users also send emoji built from several code points, and these are where the nastiest text bugs hide:

  • Skin tones: 👋🏽 is the waving hand followed by a modifier, U+1F3FD, so it is two code points.
  • ZWJ sequences: 👩‍💻 is 👩, an invisible zero-width joiner and 💻. Split it in the wrong place and two separate emoji appear.
  • Flags: 🇩🇪 is two regional indicator letters, D and E.

In JavaScript, '👩‍💻'.length is 5 and [...'👩‍💻'].length is 3, but a person sees one character. Use Intl.Segmenter with granularity: 'grapheme' when a limit or a cursor position must match what users see, and paste a few of these alongside the generated emoji to prove it works.

Options

Generate up to 1,000 emoji per run. The separator setting controls how they are joined: spaces for a readable row, new lines for a list you can paste into a spreadsheet, or no separator for a continuous string such as 🐙🍕🚀.

Display depends on your device

Emoji are drawn by the fonts on the viewing device, so the same emoji looks different on iOS, Android and Windows, and very new emoji may appear as empty boxes on older systems. The generator sticks to long-established Unicode ranges to keep results widely supported. Some symbols, such as ☀ or ❤, may appear as monochrome text characters unless an emoji presentation selector is added.

Frequently asked questions

How do I copy the emoji?
Use the copy button or select the output and copy it. Emoji are normal text characters, so they paste into chats, documents, social posts and code.
Why do some emoji show as boxes?
Your device’s fonts do not include that character. Updating the operating system usually adds support for newer emoji.
Why do some symbols look black and white?
Characters like the sun or heart exist as both text symbols and emoji. Some platforms show the text style unless the character is followed by an emoji variation selector.
Can the same emoji appear more than once?
Yes. Each emoji is picked independently, so repeats are possible, especially in small categories.
