Preview your Google snippet with the SERP preview tool
Your title tag and meta description are often the first thing people see of your page. If they are too long, Google truncates them with "…" and the key message may be lost. This SERP preview simulates a search result and measures the title in pixels — the way Google actually decides where to cut — not only in characters.
Why pixels, not characters?
Google's desktop results truncate titles at roughly 580–600 pixels. A title full of narrow letters (i, l, t) fits many more characters than one with wide letters (W, M) or capitals. The tool measures your title with the same 20 px Arial font Google uses for result titles and shows a meter: green when it fits, amber when it is very short and red when it will likely be cut. Descriptions are shown in 14 px text and are typically cut after about 150–160 characters on desktop and fewer on mobile.
What the checks look at
- Title width and length, with a warning when it will be truncated or is shorter than about 30 characters.
- Description length, with hints for empty, short (<70 characters) or too long descriptions (wider than the space for about 150–160 characters on desktop, less on mobile).
- Whether the focus keyword appears in the title and description. Matching words are shown in bold in the preview, as Google does for query terms.
Writing tips
- Put the most important words first; truncation removes the end.
- Make every title unique and describe the specific page, not just the brand.
- Write the description as a short pitch that answers the searcher's question and ends with a reason to click.
- Avoid keyword stuffing. Google may rewrite titles and descriptions it finds unhelpful.
Keep in mind
Google does not always use your tags: it may choose a different title or pull a description from the page when it better matches the query. A well-written, accurately sized snippet still gives you the best chance of being shown as intended. Check how the same page appears on social networks with the Open Graph preview, generate the rest of your head tags with the meta tag generator and create clean URLs with the slug generator.
Desktop versus mobile
Mobile results are narrower but use a similar font size, so titles are usually cut a little later in characters but descriptions earlier. Switch the preview between the two views to make sure the beginning of both texts carries your message on every device. The site name and breadcrumb-style URL above the title are generated from the fields you enter, similar to how Google shows them.
