How to use the CSV to Multi-line Data Converter

  1. Paste CSV, upload or drop a file, use Load URL, or click Sample.
  2. Tick Prefix values with column name if each line should read name: value.
  3. Choose what goes Between records: a blank line, a --- line or nothing.
  4. Click Convert to Multi-line Text, then copy or download the text.

CSV to multi-line text blocks

Some destinations do not want a table at all: a label printer template, a chat message, a note on a phone or a plain-text email. This CSV to multi-line converter rewrites every row as a vertical block, one field per line, with a separator between records. It is the spreadsheet row turned on its side.

Example: address labels

name,street,city
Jane Doe,12 Elm St,Springfield
Raj Patel,"Flat 4, 9 High Rd",Leeds

With the default options, each record becomes an address block:

Jane Doe
12 Elm St
Springfield

Raj Patel
Flat 4, 9 High Rd
Leeds

The quoted street with a comma stays on one line, because the file is parsed as real CSV rather than split at every comma.

Options

  • Prefix values with column name – writes street: 12 Elm St instead of the bare value. That turns the output into readable key/value notes and makes it clear which line is which.
  • Between records – Blank line (default) for labels and printouts, --- line for a visible divider, or Nothing for one continuous list of values.
  • First row is header – ticked, the header only provides the names for the prefix option. Unticked, the header line is treated as data and appears as the first block.
  • Detect numbers & booleans – affects how numbers are written; untick it to keep values such as 4.50 exactly as typed.

With the prefix and the --- separator, the same data reads like this:

name: Jane Doe
street: 12 Elm St
city: Springfield
---
name: Raj Patel
street: Flat 4, 9 High Rd
city: Leeds

Other uses

  • Posting a few records in a chat, ticket or forum where tables do not render.
  • Reading a wide CSV on a phone, where one field per line is easier than scrolling sideways.
  • Preparing text for tools and forms that take one value per line, such as bulk entry boxes.

Empty cells and line breaks

An empty cell still produces its line, just an empty one. With the Blank line separator, that can look like the end of a record, for example when an optional second address line is missing. Choose the --- separator or the column prefix whenever some cells may be empty. A cell that itself contains line breaks keeps them, so a multi-line note stays readable in the output.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this to print mailing labels?
Yes. Put the address columns in label order in your CSV, convert with the Blank line separator and paste the blocks into your label template or word processor.
How do I get column names in front of each value?
Tick Prefix values with column name. Each line then reads column: value, using the names from the header row.
Why is there an extra blank line inside a record?
That record has an empty cell, which produces an empty line. Use the --- separator or the column-name prefix so record boundaries stay clear.
Can I leave out some columns?
The converter writes every column. Remove unwanted columns from the CSV first, for example in a spreadsheet, and convert again.
