When a JPG is the better choice
GIF is limited to 256 colors, which makes it a poor home for photographic images. Many older sites and apps nevertheless saved photos, screenshots and frames as GIF. JPEG handles millions of colors and is accepted by every photo service, print shop and document editor. This GIF to JPG converter creates a standard JPEG from your GIF, with control over quality and background.
What to expect from GIF to JPG conversion
- Colors: the GIF's colors are reproduced faithfully; JPEG cannot restore colors that the GIF palette already reduced, so dithering patterns remain visible.
- Transparency: JPEG has no transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background color you choose (white by default).
- Animation: only the first frame of an animated GIF is converted, giving you a still image.
- Quality: JPEG is lossy. The default quality of 90 keeps the image crisp; lower values shrink the file further.
Good uses
- Creating a still preview or thumbnail from an animated GIF for a blog post, video listing or chat message.
- Converting photo-like GIFs from old websites or archives into a modern, widely supported format.
- Uploading an image to a service that accepts JPG but not GIF, such as some profile photo or print forms.
When to avoid JPG
GIFs are often simple graphics: logos, icons, pixel art and text banners with a handful of flat colors. JPEG compression adds soft, blotchy artifacts around sharp edges in such images, and the file may even become larger than the GIF. For graphics, convert to PNG with the GIF to PNG converter, which is lossless and keeps transparency.
Choosing the background color
Transparent GIFs usually have a hard edge: each pixel is either visible or not. Filling the transparent area with white works for most documents. If the image will sit on a dark or colored background, choose that color so the edges look natural and no white box appears around the shape.
Size comparison
The status line shows the original GIF size, the new JPG size and the dimensions. For photo-like images the JPG is often smaller; for flat graphics it can be larger, which is a sign that PNG would have been the better target.
To also resize the image, use the image resizer. For modern web delivery, you can take the result further with the JPG to WebP converter.
Everything happens in your browser with the canvas API: the image is never uploaded, and the converted file is created on your device.
