Paragraph Counter for Essays, Articles and Posts
Assignments often ask for a set number of paragraphs, and web articles read better when long blocks are broken up. This paragraph counter tells you how many paragraphs your text contains and shows words, sentences, lines and characters next to it.
What counts as a paragraph
A paragraph is a block of text separated from the next block by at least one blank line. A line that contains only spaces or tabs also counts as blank. Several blank lines in a row still count as a single separator, and blank lines at the start or end are ignored.
A single line break does not start a new paragraph. That is why the tool also reports lines: a poem or an address can have many lines but only one paragraph.
Example
Line one
line two
Para two
Para three
Paragraphs: 3
Lines: 8
The first paragraph spans two lines. It is separated from “Para two” by a line holding only spaces, which counts as blank. The three empty lines before “Para three” act as one separator.
When the count looks wrong
Some editors and websites copy paragraphs with just one line break between them instead of a blank line. The whole text then counts as a single paragraph. Two fixes:
- Add a blank line between paragraphs before counting.
- Use the Text Replacer in regular-expression mode to replace each single line break (
\n) with two (\n\n).
The opposite problem, too many paragraphs, usually comes from hard-wrapped text with blank lines in odd places. Remove stray gaps with Remove Empty Lines and then re-insert the real paragraph breaks.
Paragraph length guidelines
There is no universal rule, but common conventions help. School essays often follow a five-paragraph structure: introduction, three body paragraphs and a conclusion. On the web, shorter paragraphs of two to four sentences are easier to scan on phones.
Compare the paragraph count with the sentence count to get a feel for average paragraph length. For example, 24 sentences across 6 paragraphs means about 4 sentences each. For detailed sentence analysis, see the Sentence Counter; for words, characters and reading time, use the Word Counter.
Using the count to plan your writing
Divide the word count by the paragraph count to see your average paragraph length. A 750-word essay in five paragraphs averages 150 words each; if one paragraph runs to 300 words while another has 40, the structure is probably unbalanced, even when the total meets the brief.
The counter uses the same rule as Markdown: blank lines separate paragraphs, and single line breaks do not. A draft written in Markdown, or pasted from a Markdown editor, therefore gets the same count as the paragraphs you see when it is rendered, with headings and list blocks counted as blocks of their own.
