A QR code reader for images, screenshots and webcams
Sometimes the QR code is not in front of your phone: it is in an e-mail attachment, a PDF you screenshotted, or on a laptop screen. This QR code reader decodes the code directly in your browser from an uploaded image, a pasted screenshot or a live camera feed, and shows you what it contains before anything is opened.
What the reader recognises
- Links — the full URL and its domain, with an explicit Open link button.
- Wi-Fi codes — network name, password, security type and whether the network is hidden.
- Contacts — vCard and MeCard fields such as name, company, phone and e-mail.
- E-mail, SMS, phone and geo codes, plus calendar events.
- Plain text, including codes that contain JSON, serial numbers or one-time setup strings.
The raw content is always shown as well, so you can copy it into another tool — for example a URL into the URL parser to inspect its query parameters.
Scanning tips
For uploads, the reader tries several resolutions and both normal and inverted colours, and draws a green outline around the code it found. If decoding fails, crop closer to the code, make sure the full white border is visible, and avoid strong glare or blur. The camera mode needs a secure (HTTPS) page and your permission; it samples a few frames per second and stops automatically when it finds a code.
Check before you click
QR codes are increasingly used for phishing ("quishing"): a sticker on a parking meter or a code in an e-mail sends you to a fake login page. Because this tool shows the destination first, you can check that the domain really belongs to the company you expect before opening it. Be especially careful with shortened links and with codes asking you to log in or pay.
Common uses
- Reading the Wi-Fi password stored in a code on a router sticker or hotel card, when you want to connect a laptop.
- Extracting the setup key from a two-factor authentication QR code to store it in a password manager.
- Checking where a code on a flyer, invoice or parcel notification really points before visiting it.
- Debugging codes your own application generates, by comparing the decoded text with the expected value.
- Copying text from a code on a slide or poster into a document without retyping it.
Make your own codes
Need to create a code rather than read one? Use the QR code generator or the Wi-Fi QR code generator.
Privacy
Images and camera frames are processed locally with the open-source jsQR library. Nothing is uploaded, and the camera stops as soon as a code is read or you click Stop camera.
